Where It All Started…
From inception to completion, our Co-op was a 17-month process. In May 1981, Vancouver City Council designated Enclave 20 of Champlain Heights for nonprofit co-operative housing. In the month that followed, the Champlain Heights Development Group, architects and Columbia Housing got together to discuss this piece of land and formed the Interim Board of Directors, and at this time the Incorporation documents were signed.
In the following few months the Co-op joined the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada and C.M.H.C. (Canadian Mortgage and Housing Commission) approved the start-up funds for the co-op.
In November 1981, the first general meeting of members was held and elections for the Board of Directors took place. By Christmas, Kinross Creek became officially incorporated in BC.
Early in 1982, the architects and the construction contracts were signed. In February 1982, the ground breaking ceremony took place and construction began. During this time, the operating agreement was signed with C.M.H.C., the land lease was signed with the City and the mortgage signed with the Co-op trust company of Canada.
By mid-October 1982, the Co-op was completed and the members moved in. There are still original members living in the Co-op today.
